Camouflage Animals in Art
Second grade students looked at the artwork of Henri Rousseau to discover how texture, color, and overlapping can help camouflage animals in their environment. After learning how to use hand measurements to check proportion and drawing shapes to create the form of the animal, students illustrated these fantastic creatures. The students used crayon resist and watercolor paints along with marker and oil pastel to create realistic hues for their animals and backgrounds.

Second grade discovered that robots perform all sorts of tasks for humans and decided to design some robots of their own to help with all sorts of jobs! In order to make their robot pop off the page, second graders used tints and shades to make the robot appear 3-D.

Second Graders created these lovely self portraits in the style of the artist Chuck Close...
Winslow Homer painted the sea to represent the struggle of man against nature. He used expressive colors and a sense of movement in his artwork to evoke a strong response from his audiences. Second graders worked with the idea of creating a “mood” as they painted their own seascapes with watercolor. Each student drew their ship using shapes and hand-measurements to get an accurate depiction. After establishing a horizon line and mixing their colors the students overlapped their ships on their papers.
Second graders created these funny Angry Birds using pinch pot and joining techniques.
Second Graders love playing Angry Birds almost as much as they love making them in clay! Here are the bisque-ware birds. Glazed versions to come soon!!
Second Grader’s used shading and highlights to make these delicious desserts in the style of the Pop Artist Wayne Tiebaud. Special attention was given to arranging shapes in interesting ways to catch the eye of the viewer. Bright oil pastel colors make these pieces really POP!
In honor of Chinese New Year second grade created these beautiful bamboo brush paintings using traditional Chinese brushes and ink. Not only an elegant picture, these grasses are a symbol of new beginnings!
Marc Chagall inspired watercolor paintings
Second graders retold a story, dream or memory using the compositional style of the artist Marc Chagall. After dividing the paper into sections, the students rotated the picture for each illustration to give the sense of fantasy that is such a strong element of Marc Chagall's artwork. Can you identify a self portrait, home, and animal in these artworks among the other illustrations?
Second graders have been studying and interpreting the concept of community in their classroom. Through the guidance of Gretchen Junker and her collection of Legos, the class worked in groups to make these scale models of buildings within Oak Park. The attention to detail is outstanding and resulted from the high level of engagement each student exhibited during this lesson.
Second graders used oil pastel to create a fall landscape complete with horizon lines and convincing colors. Collaged paper was used to create the trunk and trees, along with the autumn leaves.
Camouflage Animal Prints
Second grade discussed how color, shape, texture, and size can help animals to blend into their environments. After choosing an animal, each student hid their animal within their picture. The result you see here was achieved with a marker printmaking process. Enjoy!
