First Grade Learns about Kandinsky

Russian abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky painted his concentric circle pieces while listening to classical music. First graders did the same and came up with some interesting color combinations!

Second Grade Architects Design Homes

Second grade learned all about the parts of a building as they designed their dream home or drew the elevation of the house they live in now. Each drawing with then transfered into a foam printing block and printed onto a sky background of warm or cool colors!

A Visit with Lynn Allen from the Multicultural Department!

Second graders ooohed and ahhhhed as Ms. Allen spoke about the Mexican holiday of Dia de Los Muertos. As she explained the history and artifacts surrounding the holiday students asked thoughtful questions about how to keep the memory of their ancestors alive. Hands were excitedly raised as anecdotes about the ways in which their families remember loves ones who are no longer here were shared with Ms. Allen. Objects from the multicultural department were lovingly admired and passed from hand to hand, including an authentic sugar skull. One student smiled as Ms. Allen left saying, "I'm glad I know the difference now between Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos, Halloween is scary, but Dia de Los Muertos is not!"

Architecture: Castles

First grade learned about the parts and purpose of a castle during medieval times as the class worked together to paint the stone facade. An effort was made to offset the bricks to "keep the walls standing up." Our castle is proudly hung in the Media Center and presided over by Queens Catherine Hamilton and Paula Caradine of the Land of Lincoln. A big thank you to Architecture Adventure and Adrienne McMullen for cutting out our castle and providing the painting supplies!
