After learning about how Fauvist artists were called “Wild Beasts” for their colorful painting style, third graders used their knowledge of creating depth in a landscape to create these bold paintings.

Oaxacan Owls
Third graders created these playful buhos
(owls) sculptures based on the colorful craft of Oaxacan animal carvings or animalitos (little animals). Traditionally, these sculptures are painted in festive designs and patterns that are symbolic of the Oaxacan region of Mexico. Master artisans pass on their trade from generation to generation resulting in recognizable signature styles for each family.

Third Graders designed these amazing hybrid animals after learning about actual hybrids like the beefalo, geep, and zonkey. Can you guess which creatures were combined to make the new species?

OP Art

Optical Art became popular in the late 1950’s when artists like Victor Vasarely began to show their artwork in galleries. Third graders learned to “trick the eye” by using converging lines, complimentary color and shading to create these amazing illusions.

Vanishing Point: The spot where all lines converge to show depth

Complimentary Colors: Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.

Shading: Adding a shadow to make a drawing appear three-dimensional

Inspired by the amazing work Rebecca Kuntz (daughter of Lincoln teacher Matt Kuntz) is doing to help build an educational center in Ghana, third graders learned about students in Ghana just like them who love to learn and play. Glazed alphabet tiles made by staff and students were sent to decorate the walls of the learning center, while others were sold at the annual carnival to benefit the cause. To connect the experience of the third graders to those of the children in Ghana, students learned how to weave based on Kente cloth and designed their own symbol based on on Adinkra cloth.

Please feel free to visit Rebecca's site to hear more about the amazing things that are happening for young people in Ghana:

Manga comes in many forms, but Manga Chibi may just be the cutest and coolest according to Lincoln Third Graders. Each Chibi is a cartoon version of the students themselves with features and accessories to match.

Third Graders made these intricate masks using plaster of paris on a face mold. They took inspiration from masks around the world to develop a character that represents their Alter-Ego.

Third Grade reviewed horizon line and discovered shading with these pumpkin patch pastel drawings.
