Winslow Homer painted the sea to represent the struggle of man against nature. He used expressive colors and a sense of movement in his artwork to evoke a strong response from his audiences. Second graders worked with the idea of creating a “mood” as they painted their own seascapes with watercolor. Each student drew their ship using shapes and hand-measurements to get an accurate depiction. After establishing a horizon line and mixing their colors the students overlapped their ships on their papers.
